Currently in China some schools execute parallel education. In western education history both parallel education and co-instructional education were implemented. Which one is better for students’ development? Below are some features of these two education model.
Parallel education is conducted d on the cognitive development difference between boys and girls
Boys and girls have different cognitive development so parallel education teaches students according to their aptitude and will help them reach higher achievements.
A 10-year study conducted by the Australian Ministry of Education showed that the girls in girls’s chools prefer science while boys in boy’s school prefer music and art. The result is different from the opinion in co-instructional schools: boys are good at science and girls are skilled in liberal arts.
The brain structure is different between boys and girls
Due to different brain structure between boys and girls the way of thinking and solving problem are also different. Boys and girls at the same age have different leaning ability. Thus in parallel education the character and advantage of boys and girls can be fully developed through individualized education such as different disciplines and sports activities etc.
Students are more likely to focus on study in parallel education
For teenagers boys and girls are more likely to focus on study rather than love affairs in parallel education.
Parallel education is not absolute segregation for boys and girls
In parallel education boys and girls also have chance to meet and build friendship. The adjacent boys’ schools and girls’ schools co-host some activities each year. So there is no need for parents to worry about parallel education will affect their children’s communication ability with the opposite sex.
Co- instructional education can improve the communication and cooperation ability for boys and girls
The character difference between boys and girls is more important than the gender difference. We need to respect the natural development for boys and girls encourage them to communicate and cooperate.
Cultivate the communication ability between boys and girls
The communication between men and women is necessary for social activities. Parallel education avoids the normal contact between boys and girls which may lead to some psychological problems and personality defects.
Fully take advantage of education resource
Gender difference is an educational resource so parallel education is a waste of resource. Because of gender differences boys and girls have their own advantages and disadvantages. Co-instructional education allows interaction between boys and girls so they can learn from each other and have joint development.
How to balance the parallel education and co- instructional education?
Parallel education focus on the gender difference that is people’s natural attributes; and co-instructional education emphasizes on the character difference which is the social attributes.
Whether gender difference or personality difference they should become the focus of education because education should be people-oriented. Is there a special curriculum can balance parallel education and co- instructional education?
The boys and girls of Haileybury College study in the same campus. But the school arranges education and social activities d on different age gender and curriculum which is targeted parallel education.
Specific measures are as follows:
Early Learning Centres and Junior Schools (Prep toYear 4) are co-instructional
Years 5 to 9 boys and girls interact for appropriate activities co-curricular and social programs such as drama music social and community activities and functions.
Senior School (Years 10 to 12) will generally have single-gender classes except where co-instructional learning is advantageous. Separate study and recreational areas will be available for boys and girls or they may choose to use a range of shared community areas.
Anyway with regard to the parallel education and co-instructional education it is hard to say which one is better. But our education system is inclusive of more education models.
